    • MRS. A.S. COLE PASSES AWAY
Resident Here for Years Had Part In Cultural Life Of Community

Death early this morning claimed Mrs. Mary Jane Fritz Cole, 80, wife of A. Spencer Cole, widely-known Scioto county farmer, at their home, 1408 Franklin avenue. Mrs. Cole suffered a heart attack and died between 5 and 7 a.m. today.
Monday afternoon Mrs. Cole spent a pleasant time with old friends at her home, and apparently was in her usual health. She and Mr. Cole enjoyed the evening at home and retired early, as was their custom.
During the night Mrs. Cole became ill and a physician was called. At about 5 a.m. she went to sleep and never awakened. Mr. Cole discovered she had died during her sleep, when he arose this morning.
Mrs. Cole, known to her friends as Mollie, long had been identified with cultural and religious activities of Portsmouth. During early womanhood she was an outstanding pianist in the city, and all through life had kept up her playing. It was her custom to play the piano a little each day, and she and Mr. Cole often spent many a musical evening at home playing and singing her favorite songs and hymns.
She was a member of the old Ladies' Musicale, which organization used to bring outstanding artists to the city. Mrs. Cole also was a charter member of the Buckeye club and a lifelong member of Bigelow Methodist church. As long as her health permitted, Mrs. Cole was active in the work of the church.
Closely associated throughout their 58 years of wedded life, Mr. and Mrs. Cole during the last 10 years or so had spent their winters in Florida. They were in Florida during the time of the 1937 flood, when they resided at 1104 Second street. They lived at the Second street home for 24 years, but after the flood moved to Franklin avenue.
Mrs. Cole was married on Jan. 2, 1883, to Mr. Cole at the home of her stepfather and mother, Thomas C. and Eleanor Simpson Fritz Yeager, on Market street. For a time after their marriage they lived on Scioto trail, but later came into Portsmouth and had lived here since, Mrs. Cole was born in Adams county, but came to Portsmouth at an early age. Her date of birth was Sept. 6, 1861.
Mrs. Cole's death is the first in the immediate family during the time of her married life.
Surviving are her husband and two daughters, Mrs. Henning Prentis of Lancaster, Pa., and Mrs. Alan Simpson of Douglas, L.I., who were here the last of October for a visit with their parents. Mrs. Prentis and Mrs. Simpson are expected here this afternoon, coming by airplane.
Also surviving are two grandchildren, Mrs. Frazier Casey of Douglaston and Dr. Alan Simpson of New York city, and three great grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Cole had expected to leave next month to spend Christmas at the Prentis home.
Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by her mother, who died in 1924, an infant brother and a half-brother, Thomas Yeager, who died in 1913.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Daehler
