- State of New Jersey, Office of the Adjutant-General, Trenton, August 18,1903: "It is CERTIFIED that the records of this office show that Sylvanus Tuttle served as a private, Minute Man, in the Morris County, New Jersey, Militia; also Private, Captain James Keen's Company, Eastern Battalion, Morris County, New Jersey militia, during the Revolutionary War. (Taken from the DAR application of Martha Byrd Tuttle Owen, 10 April 1923). Supposed to have been at the Battle of Monmouth. Musket carried during the war last known to be in the possession of James T. Tuttle. Emigrated from New Jersey. Settled first in Pennsylvania, location not known. Visited there by his father when they decided to move to Virginia. Moved to the vicinity of Clarksburg, Virginia (now West Virginia) where they remained for 15-16 years. Most of the children born there. Moved to Clark County, Ohio near end of October, 1806 and located along Buck Creek about 6 mi E of New Moorefield and nr Catawba Sta on Delaware banch of the C.C.C. & St. L RR on land owned by a Mr. Van Meter.
