    Cause: apoplexy 
    • Samuel P. Davis, a well know resident, fell dead Monday morning at 10 o'clock while in the office of Dr. Foster in the Decatur Medical Institute at 316 North Main Street.

      The death was a very sudden one and came without warning. Mr. Davis had not been in the very best of health for the past two years, but had been about as usual. His death was due to a stroke of apoplexy.

      Mr. Davis was talking with Dr. and Mrs. Foster and some other friends in the doctor's office. He had planned to go with a party of friends to the country. He was seated in a chair and was talking about some farm land and had started to say that some friend had been offered $125 an acre for his place. He had not quite finished the sentence when he stopped talking, his head fell forward and when those about him rushed to his side he was dead. Before anyone realized what had happened Mr. Davis was dead.

      Coroner Dawson was notified and the body was removed to the Dawson undertaking parlors and an inquest was held Monday night at 7 o'clock.

      The jury returned a verdict that death was due to a stroke of apoplexy.

      Mr. Davis' relatives day that his health had been poor for some time past. He suffered a good deal on account of rheumatism and had other ailments and was in generally had health. The members of the family and friends were all greatly shocked when they heard of the death as Mr. Davis had been about the city and had not appeared to be any worse than usual.

      Samuel P. Davis was born in Adams county, Ohio, April 25, 1838. He was married in that state and came to Illinois with his wife thirty-nine years ago. Mr. Davis has been a farmer all his life.

      He lived for a number of years near Harristown and later moved to a farm near Niantic where he lived for fifteen years. With his wife Mr. Davis moved to Niantic to reside in the village, but three weeks after he went to that place his wife died and several years later he came to Decatur. He had a room in the Powers block, but frequently visited with his sons and daughters.

      He leaves four children. They are William P. Davis of Niantic, L. V. Davis of Kankakee, Miss Mary Davis of Galesburg and Mrs. Gertie Downing, wife of Walter Downing of Latham. He also leaves four grandchildren. All of Mr. Davis' sisters and brothers are dead, he being the last of the family.

      The funeral will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday from the Chrisitian church in Harristown. The burial will be at the Harristown cemetery.
