    Notes 
    • Mary Christine Johnson came from the country of Denmark and as a child of 5 or 6 walked across the plains with a Mormon handcart company called Martin Handcart Co. During that time she lost her parents on the plains. The handcart company became stranded on the mountains outside of Salt Lake City in the winter and her feet were frozen. Brigham Young who was the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints ( Mormon Church) and the Governor of the state of Utah, sent a group of men to rescue them. Her frozen feet were amputated, then a few years later were amputated below the knees. Finally as a teenager they were amputated above the knees. Brigham Young took her into his home and raised her ntil she was 19. She occasionally visited her older sister in American Fork, Utah. She married a school teacher from England and raised 6 children, walking on the stumps of her legs the rest of her life. He taught school in Salt Lake City while she remained on the farm in Kosharem raising their children, coming home during the summer months. Mary Christine had been taught to be an excellent seamstress and she earned money making mens vests and suits. She could also draft patterns to make clothes and also made hats. She often knitted lace and sold it to supplement their income.
