- HAROLD L. MAINS
PORTSMOUTH-Harold Lee Mains, 80, of Portsmouth, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017 at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born July 23, 1936 in Otway, a son of the late George William and Blanche Davis Mains.
A member of Temple Baptist Church, Harold was a retired maintenance and janitorial worker from the former Jenkins School for Washington-Nile Township. He had also been a TV repairman for Euton's TV for 25 years, and had worked at the former Empire-Detroit Steel Corporation. He was a 1955 graduate of Rarden High School where he played on the basketball team. An Army veteran, he earned the Driver's Badge with Bar, and the Marksman (Rifle) and Good Conduct Medals.
Harold was a member of the James Dickey Post American Legion and he was an avid bowler and Ohio State Buckeyes fan. His high bowling game was 298 and he played in a traveler's league for many years. He also loved to tinker with his beloved 1952 Ford Victoria.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Sparks Mains, whom he married July 20, 1996 in Portsmouth; a son, Harold Randolph "Randy" (Lori) Mains of Kitts Hill; a stepson, Eric (Jasmin Ballaran) Winters of Belleville, IL; two stepdaughters, Marcie Besco of Portsmouth and Rae (Karla Creel) Hancock of Kettering; two brothers, James Robert (Marjorie) Mains of Lucasville and Donald Mains of Peebles; one sister, Linda (Charles "Bud") Jordan of Montgomery, AL; three grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Paul Long of McDermott; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, William Mains, William's wife Janet; and a sister, Jeanette F. Long.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth with Rev. John Gowdy officiating and interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The James Dickey Post #23 American Legion Honor Detail will conduct military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 11 am until the funeral hour.
