- Harriett M. Surry, 105, of 3930 Johnson Ave. NW, which she shared with her daughter, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center following a brief illness. Private services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Cedar Memorial, with burial there. No visitation.
Survivors include her daughter, Maxine Wasson, and granddaughter, Kimberly Wasson of Marion.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Marie Prusek and Lillian Kluber two brothers, Milo and Joseph Prusek Jr.; her husband on September 28, 1950; a grandson, Kevin Wasson; and son-in-law, Walter Wasson.
Born on Oct. 8, 1894, in Cedar Rapids, to Joseph and Anna Prusek, Harriett married Emil M. Surry on June 7, 1920. She and her husband owned and operated Surry's Food Market for a number of years. He was a past president of the Iowa Retail Grocers and Meat Dealers Association and she was involved in auxiliary activities.
Harriett united with Trinity United Methodist Church in May 1918 with two co-workers at Hetherington's Direct Mail and Advertising Co., where she was employed prior to her marriage. The church had always been an integral part of her life. She was a member of what was the Susannah Wesley Class, the original Mary Circle, more recent circles and the United Methodist Women. Due to vision and hearing impairment, her activity had been limited for a number of her later years.
She will always be remembered for her quiet, gentle and easy going manner and greatly missed.
As the bird free of its cage seeks the heights, so the Christian soul in death flied home to God. May he be with you 'till we meet again.
